MELBOURNE, July 28 (Bernama) — A leading Malaysian fashion designer will take part in a batik design house launch in Jakarta that will feature Annisa Larasati Pohan and Aira Yudhoyono, the daughter-in-law and granddaughter of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Monica Lim, who is based in Melbourne, will present designs at the launch of Alleira Batik on Aug 4, at the Ritz-Carlton Jakarta.
Her designs will use Alleira batik but are designed specifically for the Australian market.
Alleira, a high-end batik design house, has a retail presence across Indonesia, and has outlets in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.
Formerly known as Allure Batik, it is re-branding as Alleira in keeping with its international brand.
“Batik is a wonderfully versatile and beautiful art, and we wanted to show that it can also appeal to a younger, fashion-forward, Western customer.
“It’s not the traditional demographic for batik, but that’s the whole point. We want to establish batik as a classic, not just in South-East Asia, but internationally,” said Lim.
Hers is the classic case of the legal fraternity’s loss becoming the fashion world’s gain.
Lim, who quit her job as a tax lawyer at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu here five years ago, to have a crack at the fashion world, has four up-market fashion stores called Fame Agenda in the CBD here.
She also owns the successful Myl designer label clearance store here. She has created a line of evening bags and styled in an in-house label for Fame Agenda.
Last year, she opened the Japanese noodle cafeteria, Ramen Ya, in the old Melbourne post office building in the CBD.
Lim, 32, was born Kuala Lumpur and is married to Indonesian-born lawyer Konfir Kabo. They have two young children
