South Staffordshire College Fashion Students Reach Regional Final

Two fashion students from South Staffordshire College have reached the final of a major regional competition.
Sammy- Jo Witton from Chase Terrace and April Kimber from Lichfield, both studying for their BTEC National Diploma in Fashion at the College’s Lichfield campus, have secured a place in the Midlands Young Fashion Designer Awards (MYFDA) show in October.
Both students were shortlisted in the Haute Couture category of the competition, and will be up against twenty two other finalists showing their collections of three garments in their chosen category: Haute Couture, Evening Wear, and Ready to Wear.
Event organiser Jenny Eason said “Feedback from the judges is that standards were exceptionally highthis year and they had great difficulty selecting the finalists, especially from the ready to wear category”. Amongst this year’s host of fashion expert judges is Sky 3’s Project Catwalk finalist Viv Whelan.
The Midlands Young Fashion Designer Awards (MYFDA) is an annual fashion showcase created in Birmingham and aims to expose the wealth of creative talent across the region. The MYFDA supports fashion students and fashion graduates by offering a platform to develop their careers and is a great opportunity for them to gain valuable experience, networking opportunities and exposure, not only to fashion enthusiasts or the public attending, but to fashion professionals and the media.
Now in its third year, the MYFDA offers a platform enabling designers to showcase their collections. South Staffordshire College has had a learner in the final since the competition was launched. In 2008 Lauren Knight and Nicola Allsopp were finalists, and in 2009 Heba El-Husseini showed her collection “Entrapment” on the catwalk at the Novotel Hotel on Broad Street.
This year the 2010 MYFDA will be held in the heart of Birmingham City Centre at the amazing Birmingham Conservatoire on 23rd October 2010.
