Milan fashion week: Versus – what women want

Donatella Versace made a brilliant decision when she put Versus in Christopher Kane’s capable hands
Donatella Versace was in a good mood before the Versus presentation. I know this because I had the privilege of a preview — sometimes it helps to be on the early flight. There she was, a big grin on her face, offering me tea, coffee, anything? I was shaken. Does the queen of Italian fashion boil a kettle? I blame Christopher Kane, he’s just so darn nice. No wonder it is infectious. Versace made a brilliant decision when she put Versus in Kane’s capable hands. The Scot is a very exciting designer; two seasons in and his clever, open, commercial mind has already given Versace a new sense of purpose and cool.
This time a series of Bruce Weber photographs inspired him. The colours, regal turquoise, tomato and prune, are the same shades that Weber washed over his original prints. In among the strapped, buckled, cocktail dresses, Kane tucked Weber tees into pleated silk cheerleader skirts. “The girls are little tough soldiers out to get you,” was his laughing description and I take his word for it. Kane knows what girls want to wear and he loves the manufacturing quality on offer at Versace. Together it is a seductive combination.
