Student designers show their stuff at Wear in the World fashion show

I think student fashion shows are really interesting to attend, and every year I look forward to them. The students are completely invested in the creative process and totally immersed in exploring their artistic vision. It’s exciting to see them living their dream while their creations grace the runway.
There are always a few standouts from each school that I end up hearing about as the major spring and fall Seattle fashion shows roll around. Not to mention one or two who have ended up on major television shows like “Project Runway.”
On March 11 at 8 p.m., students from the Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing programs at The Art Institute of Seattle are putting on their 12th annual show, titled “Wear in the World,” at Showbox Sodo.
The show is completely student-run and -produced under the watchful eye of executive producer Joan Kelly, who also produces the Fashion First show every September.
Last year, over 1,400 people crowded into Showbox Sodo to catch the show, which featured “Project Runway” alum Blayne Walsh as celebrity judge and Girl Power Hour’s Darnell Sue as a celebrity model.
This year’s special guest and emcee is Kendra Todd, author, real-estate guru and winner of season three of NBC’s “The Apprentice.” Yours truly is one of the judges, which is a really nice honor.
There’s a matinee show at 5 p.m., with free admission for high school students with a valid ID, and an 8 p.m. main show. General admission for both shows is $30 in advance through Ticketmaster. The judging will occur at the matinee, with the results revealed at the later show.
The event also features a raffle benefiting the Education Foundation (EDMC) and scholarship opportunities for fashion students at The Art Institute of Seattle.
Along these same lines, if you or anyone you know is an aspiring fashion designer with a photographable body of work, consider entering Seattle magazine’s 2010 Seamless in Seattle competition.
I was a judge for this contest last year and was really impressed by the designers who made it through to the final judging. Winners appear in a fashion spread in the September issue of the magazine and have the chance to launch their collection at a premier fashion event. Even if I’m not a judge this year, I look forward to seeing the best of the best come out for this contest.
