Sofia Goes to Fashion Week

Wow. In all my years of reading glossy magazines, throughout my internship at one of these magazines, not even in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I would end up at a real live fashion show during Fashion Week! Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Ninh Wysocan, the jewelry designer for this show and, I’m honored to say, my boss, I was able to attend the Doo.Ri fashion show on Wednesday to view the amazing Fall 2009 collection.

Usually during Fashion Week, I frequent style.com so I can live vicariously through high society by clicking through the sassy looks. It’s like creeping on Facebook: choose a designer (some fox with a public profile that you see around campus but don’t talk to), click their latest collection (View Photos of Fox (3,429)), and click Next to your heart’s content.  Style.com is even more gratifying than this because the photos are professional, some have the option to view close-up details, and not one of these people can take a bad picture.

But this year I got to be there. I arrived right on time, which apparently is about twenty minutes early, so I got a good standing position.  It got a little cozy on that narrow platform, but as soon as the eleventh hour struck, the adorable usher made top secret sign language and instantly sent the standing crowd hurdling over benches all around me to fill empty seats! It was fleeting. I do not speak Fashion Week, so I missed the chance to squat and feel like an editor.

I had a great view though, and got to experience the undiluted elegance of Doo.Ri. The slate and purple color scheme were so harmonious with the supple fabrics (some fur, too! Hot hot!).  There was a great balance between the structural and draped qualities of the garments, especially in the layering. And can we pause to appreciate rhinestones! Bedazzled tights were a great accessory in the edgy-elegant collection.  I won’t play editrix anymore, this city’s only big enough for however many there already are. That was fun though!

Some completely innocent, mostly non-fashion related thoughts during the show, in roughly chronological order: OMG HERE COME SOME MODELS! THEY HAVE GREY LIPSTICK ON THATS SO HOT GOTTA GET THAT for my private costume parties alone. Nina Garcia is taking notes across from me, how old is she? Ninh Wysocan’s jewelry looks amazing on the runway. Wow. I’M AT A FASHION SHOW! OMG CHANEL IMAN! Gotta loose the goofy smile/bounce, this is serious. Ooh, the camera really does add 20 lbs. on these poor things. Owch, I bet it hurts two of them to hug. Woah… The heels really are getting higher and higher! Wonder if anyone goes tumbling today. AW best song right in the middle! This collaboration is genius, two amazing designers come together for a special occasion, I feel like I am at both a museum and a mad tea party, it’s that good…

Eventually the finale commenced, the audience cheered, the lights went up, and we all came back from outer space to the rainy puddle of Chelsea. And then as swiftly as the standers became sitters, the editorial crowd made a mad, mosh-pit dash for the elevator in pursuit of their next show. Please take a moment to appreciate the beautiful artistry, militant diets, and dogpile situation the photographers were in at this amazing show: Creep on the collection yourself, and enjoy the show!
