New York Fashion Week: Playing it safe, but still luxe

To look at the sheer amount of fur, designer boots and handbags being toted around the Bryant Park tents and on the runways during Fashion Week, you wouldn’t suspect America is in the midst of a recession.

But the looks shown here twice a year to media and buyers aren’t the mass-market clothes that wind up in mainstream stores. The fashions are more likely to be found in boutiques and upscale department stores, where women and men put a premium on style and are willing to pay for it.

Still, there is change in the air at Fashion Week.

Retailers are more cautious these days about what they put on their racks, knowing that consumers want newness but are making their purchases more carefully. Designers, taking cues

So what’s new?

First, what’s sticking around. Women who invested in skinny pants and oversized tops this winter will be pleased to know the look will continue a year from now, with some variations. Ditto for one-shoulder dresses, draped tops, metallic fabrics, menswear-inspired looks, tough-chic boots and oversized necklaces
