New York Fashion Week: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Khaki: in Britain it’s pronounced “car key”, while the Americans opt for the more unfortunate (to our ears, at least) “cacky”. And as the extravagantly attired fashion cultists observed on the way out into the snow after the show, there was a whole lotta cacky going on at the Marc Jacobs mid-range but high-selling Marc collection. There were cacky cargo pants (UK translation: combat trousers) in a wool melton that looked really quite uncomfortable to wear, cacky coats, cacky army coats and even a cacky romper suit. It was part of a utility/military schtick that dominated the first half of Marc, and which also saw him use supposed army blankets as dress material, work in the odd flash of camouflage and give a pair of trousers the call-sign “Maverick”. More maverick than those cacky pants though was the stylist’s decision to send so very many of the female models out in flat, black leather shoes teamed with mid-calf black socks pulled up to the max (hmm).
Once the military offensive was over, Marc demobbed to civilian attire, thowing in a punky red strapless plaid/check/tartan (depending on your provenance) dress, and a ladylike frock in white lace that survived its model’s crashing fall to the catwalk. Then, though, it was back into uniform — black. Particularly fine were the long, ruffled, black silk polka-dot knickerbockers or pantaloons that stayed just on the chic side of clown-in-mourning.
