London Fashion Week: Osman’s designs for all sizes

Real women of all shapes and sizes (from Dannii Minogue to Sarah Brown) will love these beautifully draped clothes
Osman Yousefzada makes some of the most flattering clothes in London. This is a designer who really is comfortable with women’s bodies in all their myriad permutations: fans include Dannii Minogue and Sarah Brown (who came to this week’s show and wore Osman to the Elle Style awards) and many really stylish women in between.
Transferring his minimalist aesthetic, subtle draping and clever but unshowy tailoring to the catwalk wasn’t all smooth sailing, however.
I saw this collection on the rail a few days before his show and those versatile draped jersey dresses, flared gabardine funnel-necked coats and cropped mohair jackets are killer pieces in any wardrobe. But they were sometimes eclipsed (literally) by billowing geometric statements that included huge checked flared trousers beneath cocoon coats.
On their own, the coats are terrific. In fact, left to their own devices, on women with non-emaciated bodies, most of his clothes are terrific. The problem here was the styling — and a faltering belief that making lovely, wearable clothes isn’t enough on a London catwalk. It is. When he focuses on that, he does it brilliantly.
