When it comes to festival fashion, anything goes, and Southbound was no exception.

Under the blazing sun on Saturday it became a case of being as naked as possible without actually being naked as the crowds attempted to remain cool in harsh conditions.

The usual quirky dress-ups by people, who decide festival time equals costume time, included all types dressed as convicts, brides, ballerinas, clowns, men in tutus and a dude being dragged around by mates in a bathtub on wheels. Many went to great effort to drag costumes (including big bear suits) through the dusty paddock and into the camping grounds only to discover if it’s hot outside, it’s really hot inside one of those things.

Festival fashion is weird, wonderful and sometimes involves simply wrapping a sheet around you toga-style (one wonders whether this young camper simply forgot to bring real clothes).

But the predominant fashion trend was ultra-short denim shorts on girls combined with cut-out bathers to create rather revealing wear for the youngsters.

High-waisted denim shorts so short they are barely acceptable in polite society, leaving more than usually desirable all hanging out, was the uniform for women under the age of 23.

And the boys loved it, with one young male heard to exclaim “I love short shorts!” as many women exposing more than is usually desirable flocked around him.

Those who declined to follow that trend went for pretty floral summer frocks, cool Fedora hats, and wayfarers were the order of the day for both men and women.
