Silver screen still rules the fashion fanatics

fashion. Through time we have seen garments, accessories, cars, language, lifestyle molding as per films of the time.
Films such as My Fair Lady brought in the characteristic fringe that Audery Hepburn sported. Flowers became a symbol after the film.
Another fashion that Audery Hepburn made famous was the shoulder tie dress from the film Sabrina. This shoulder-tied boatneck dress became a particular favourite in those days and is still popular today.
Another very famous image that still creates a buzz was from the film, The Seven Year Itch, with Marylin Monroe in a white halter dress. This white halter dress that she wore standing on the air vent became an instant sensation. Even now, over 50 years later, that dress is one of the most recognisable in the world of fashion.
Another one of my favourite movies that left a strong impression on me was Breakfast at Tiffany’s. There was great music, beautiful jewels, and of course, exceedingly chic clothes — there’s a lot to like about this film. Coco Chanel introduced the “little black dress” in 1926 and Audrey Hepburn confirmed its importance with this movie.
Cleopatra was another film where Elizabeth Taylor’s makeup stole the show. Years after the movie, women everywhere piled on blue eye shadow, black eyeliner, and false eyelashes.
Have you ever wondered where the oversized unisex look emerged from? Well, one of the starting points was the movie, Annie Hall. It was Diane Keaton who introduced the oversized unisex look as Annie Hall and it became an instant hit. Women everywhere donned loose-fitting jackets, wore socks with high heels, and developed a penchant for ties. The look remained popular for years. In fact, at present, you can see a lot of influences from the same look doing the rounds.
The black and white combination has always been a hit, but what made it bigger, especially with the men, was the movie, Saturday Night Fever. When John Travolta strutted onto the dance floor in his white suit and black shirt, men everywhere strutted into stores for a copy. It was one of the most popular looks of the late 1970s.
The 1980s were quite an age! Power dressing, chunky metallic look, big step hair dos and so much more. It was a time super-charged with aerobic obsession. When Jennifer Beals put on her torn T-shirt and leg warmers, she launched a fashion revolution. It was new and different and fit in perfectly in the aerobically-obsessed 1980s.
Gladiator sandals have been an all-time favourite through my teens! The film, Gladiator, unleashed the exciting trend of the Roman inspired strappy sandals. The whole new reincarnation of this footwear has been a trans-seasonal trend.
Another important influence of this film was the toga. Toga has influenced dresses and gowns right from simple dresses in a departmental store to nymph gowns at the red carpet. Years after this film, the look is still going strong. And by the looks of it, designers will keep their fancy around this silhouette for a long time to come.
These and many more trends have seen several fashion cycles. I think it’s rather convenient to see someone sport a new look and take on from there. But before you take the first step, just keep in mind what suits your personal style.
