Patrick Vieira’s fashion sense sinks below plimsoll line

Patrick Vieira got no farther than the touchline at the City of Manchester Stadium last night, something he was used to at Inter Milan, where he was left out of the team so often that José Mourinho appeared to have forgotten he was there.

It was a lack of match fitness rather than a lack of belief in his talents from his manager that meant Vieira was left on the sidelines as Manchester City, whom he joined on a free transfer for in the region of £140,000 a week set about proving the theory that Roberto Mancini does not need the Frenchman any more than Mourinho, his successor at the San Siro, did.

Wearing a navy blue suit with accompanying shirt and tie, Vieira managed to spoil the look with a pair of grey plimsolls. Mancini must hope that his playing ability transcends the different worlds of the Barclays Premier League and Serie A in a more discerning manner than his fashion sense.

That was the first sight that the home fans have been afforded of their club’s latest acquisition and it was limited to no more than a polite wave before the former Arsenal man retreated to his seat in the stands. In his absence Nigel de Jong and Gareth Barry got on with the job in hand, providing the kind of silk and steel midfield balance that has been the platform for many a title-winning team.

On this evidence it is hard to see what Vieira can offer that those two cannot, aside from a wealth of trophy-winning experience, with Barry’s cultivated use of the ball as conspicuous as ever and De Jong’s industrious covering affording him the opportunity to push forward at regular intervals.

Some have suggested that Vieira’s main role will be as Mancini’s trusted lieutenant, another pair of eyes and ears in the dressing room. It could be as simple as a winner being recruited in the hope that his mentality can rub off on those around him. City certainly looked like they are of the right collective mindset against Blackburn but far more testing assignments await than a meeting with a side prioritising the Carling Cup.
