Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week — Trend Watch

While the clothes take the main stage at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, the celebrity sightings can sometimes overshadow them. Spotted at the Giorgio Armani Prive show was actress Anne Hathaway, looking positively elegant in the front row. Perhaps we can look forward to her donning some of the classically elegant Armani dresses at upcoming premieres?
With rumours swirling around the Gucci empire about a possible haute couture line in the works, a source tells that Gucci head designer, Frida Giannini, could soon be in direct competition with Italian rivals Valentino and Giorgio Armani Prive. Getting accepted into the haute couture schedule is almost impossible, but soon, viewers may see Gucci show on an appointment-only basis.
Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld created a collection of ice-cream inspired hues that looked good enough to eat. Lagerfeld told that it came to him as “an electronic flash in my head at five o’clock one morning. Silver and pastel.”
“It’s the first time in my whole career I’ve done a collection without black or navy. There’s not one gold button,” Lagerfeld said.
The collection consisted of cocktail dresses sported by models with Lady Gaga-inspired hairdos. Lagerfeld closed the show with a show-stopping bridal gown that reportedly took one of the Chanel couture employees 1,300 hours of handiwork.
The collection boasted soft romantic colours mixed with hard metallics, but when suggested by a journalist backstage that his collection looked “futuristic,” Lagerfeld snapped, “I hate that.”
He continued, “I don’t believe in avant-garde clothes for a future that will never happen. Fashion is always now.”
Jean Paul Gaultier’s spectacular collection of Mexican-inspired pieces was concluded with a dramatic live performance of “Cucurrucucu Paloma” sung on the runway by a French singer who wore a gorgeous Spanish-inspired gown. The pieces included everything from pantsuits to gowns to cocktail dresses fit for an Aztec princess.
The usually classic Valentino seemed to be gearing towards the new, younger generation of fashionistas, with wildly bright colours and makeup reminiscent of the mega-hit movie Avatar. The non-traditional Valentino dresses made of chiffon were steeped in rich fluorescent hues.
For the first time, jewelry collections will officially be a part of haute couture week, based on appointment — mainly for fashion editors and stylists. Some collections taking part include: Cartier, Chanel Joaillerie, Christian Dior Joaillerie and Boucheron, to name but a few.
