From bright shades, and flamboyance in an elegant manner made a big return in 2009. MyBangalore spoke to fashion designer Sanchita Ajjampur who predicted the future in fashion, 2010.

One of the leading fashion designers in India, Sanchita Ajjampur was born in Mumbai and moved to Europe at the age of three. Educated in Vienna and the UK, she studied art in Paris and earned her Fashion degree at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne.

These are a few excerpts for the interview with the designer.

MyBangalore: Despite the economic recession, how successful would you consider was the Indian fashion scene for the year 2009-2010? Especially in terms of fresh designs?

Today’s economic situation can hinder fashion creativity and individualism. Despite the immense pool of talent, young designers tend to be sucked into compromise and mediocrity. The fashion industry and society in general should applaud uniqueness and distinctiveness, not look at conforming our youth to dress in a certain way or create designs that only sell per se.

MyBangalore: Fashion is known to be a repetitive cycle, did you notice a trend similarity in the year 2009?
History and fashion repeat themselves, and trends and styles do return after a few years, but is modernised and updated. Trends which dominated 2009 were varied.

The see through trend- sheer pieces that’s were soft and feminine to the opposite extremes of the hardcore sex-kitten

The flapper dress and fringed dress were dominant features in the 2009 runways. Whether modern and sleek, silken femininity, or showgirl burlesque, fringed and flapper dresses in particular were popularised in 2009. Single-shouldered dresses to tops and bikinis, asymmetric shoulder-lines have made a huge return in 2009.Grecian inspired was a key fashion trend in 2009. It’s both a logical flow on from the one-shoulder trend, and a natural progression from the flapper trend. Both as maxi-dresses and short little numbers, the Grecian dress is one of the key looks that any woman can indulge in.

Bejewelled pieces have been a hit over the past few years. But in 2009 they return brighter, bolder, and more elegant. This time around pieces are not just embellished but often completely encrusted by jewels; the feeling is luxurious, exotic, and yet the glamour remains somewhat understated.

MyBangalore: What according to you were the most popular colour pallets in the last year?
The colour pallet for the year 2009 would have been a harmonic and natural world which was invaded by the warm and fascinating colours of plants and spices. A collection of colours and conjuring up an array of shades in saffron, cumin and poppy; spiced nuances of pepper, mint cinnamon and ginger; sesame, clove and anise.

MyBangalore: Forecast for Fashion-2010?
Embellishments and striking colour blocking extending into swim wear. Colour blocking by mixing a fondant of colour or of vibrant brights such as fuchsia top and turquoise bottoms or orange top with purple bottoms would make a come back. Oversized printed canvas bags for the beach. Handcrafted bags and travel totes in woven leather, velvet and canvas with coated accessories for the day could get popular. Masculine silhouette Boyfriend t-shirts and adding a feminine touch with elegant tasseled sequenced sandals for casual wear would be in for the next year. Glamorous maxi dresses, in prints, or in mixed fabrics of jersey and chiffon and printed sleeveless dresses that morph into tunics when worn over trousers with easy A-line 60’s shifts, dynamic Grecian drapery, asymmetric off the one shoulder styles.

Classic clutch bags that are shine or non sheen dulled with woven leather. Embroidered or bejeweled bags with glinting rocks or subtle hand cut petals cascading all over. Shoes would be supple leather ballerinas, and flips flop. And finally, flowers in 3D forms on necklaces, as accessories for dress necklines, waistlines and as hair adornment.
