cities in India, with different celebs walking the ramp.
The Delhi chapter, of course, saw lots of designers participating in the event, with a few celebs walking the ramp, with the clothes being designed by the North East Institute of Fashion Technology designers.

On the ramp: Ritu Kumar walked the ramp, as did Mohammed Azharuddin and Shabana Azmi. But it was FDCI chief Sunil Sethi who got the loudest cheers. He even removed his cap midway, and did a jaunty catwalk. Watching his ramp stint were designers Rajesh Pratap, JJ Valaya, Gaurav Gupta, Varun Bahl, Payal Jain, Madhu Jain, Anjana Bhargava, Dhruv and Pallavi and many more. When we complimented Sethi later, he laughed and said, “Arre, I did my best. Did you like it?” Well, we did! Shabana, however, spoke like a veteran who’s been there and done that many times. “I have walked the ramp so many times, my dear,” she said.” She also spoke about how it is essential to promote handlooms in our country, because it is a dying art. “It is a very special art, and we need to promote it as high-end fashion. My mom always wore handloom, and I wanted to do my bit.”

Thank you … Since it was a semi-sarkari event, a round of thank yous and memento giving followed the fashion show. The minister, Dayanidhi Maran, of course, left midway. But secretary, ministry of textiles, Rita Menon, did the needful and so did Vikram Rai Medhi, CEO, NEIFT, who, was “the man behind the evening.” Vikram later told us, “Handlooms can be a very exciting fashion statement.”

Byte bite: Azhar did his best not to lose his cool as immediately after the show, the media converged on him. No, they did not want to know about his ramp walk, they wanted to know whether the MP Development Fund should be done away with or not, and whether it was being utilised properly. “Agar karna chahe, toh sab kar saktey hain,” mumbled Azhar. Guess he meant the utilisation part! All this while, his wife, Sangeeta Bijlani, who was also present, waited patiently for him to finish, and also gave a few style bytes of her own.
Kaam ki baatein: We heard Sunil Sethi telling all the designers “kuch kaam kar lete hain” and got them all introduced to the key people in the textiles ministry. He also took the designers on a tour of the exhibition which had also been inaugurated. We came across Nitin Bal Chauhan buying all the available kafias from a very surprised vendor.
