Glamorous trio top the list of stars that caught the eye in the fashion stakes this year
It’s been a vintage fashion year in showbiz, with clothes used to make statements in music, film and theatre. Celebrities have become integral to the fashion industry – whether they are selling their own label, like Kate Moss for Topshop, or are trend-setters like Sienna Miller.
Here’s our guide to the best-dressed women of 2009:
EMMA WATSON
As Hermione Granger, Harry Potter’s brainy best friend, Emma was supposed to cut a frumpy, plain figure but off-screen she’s a beautiful young woman with elegance and poise.
The 19-year-old puts her stamp on clothes, wears what she likes and has no stylist.
For the latest Potter premiere, she opted for a romantic chiffon Ossie Clark gown and for an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman she wore a tiered shift dress by Scottish designer Christopher Kane. Even her low-key handbag, a small black clutch was edged with the season’s fringing.
Then, showing she was ahead of this year’s trends, she wore leggings and an Eighties-style bomber jacket for the Chanel spring summer shows a year ago, long before the high street hordes followed suit.
BEYONCE
She’s one of the hottest singers in the world but this year Beyonc› showed she’s no slouch off-stage either.
She chose some edgier outfits and found a style that showed off her famous booty. None did this as effectively as the black strapless gown she poured herself into for the Academy Awards in February.
For a lunch in New York with husband Jay-Z, she wore a cute polka-dot playsuit and a big Chanel belt. Christian Louboutin peep-toe heels and a Christian Dior Samourai 1947 woven frame bag, showed the lady loves her labels.
Her stunning figure was more covered up in a beautifully cut white Elie Saab fitted dress for a performance on The Late Show, adding only black and white ruffled stilettos.
ANNA FRIEL
Swapping Brookside for Pushing Daisies and the stage production of Breakfast At Tiffany’s has done wonders for Anna.
At the Elle Style Awards, she stood out in a oneshouldered sheer black gown with mesh underlay that was modern and racier than her normal style.
By contrast, the cream vintage satin dress she wore to the aftershow party of the Breakfast At Tiffany’s premiere harked back to the old school glamour of the Forties and suited her perfectly.
But it was for the Cartier International Polo Day that she looked her best in a structured super-sexy black dress by Antonio Berardi that gave her an hourglass figure, even if she also gave Prince Charles and the other guests an eyeful by going bra-less in the daringly low-cut dress.
