| ST. PETERSBURG – The Dolphin Resort’s ballroom was the place to be last Saturday morning, Dec. 12, as the Zetas held their annual Holiday Breakfast and Fashion Show. At 9:00 a.m., the chapter president, Lisa Wilson, opened the program by greeting the audience and welcoming the festive group to the event. Ladies were dressed in fashionable holiday garments while the men were dressed in their finest suits and tuxedos. Zetas were dressed in variations of royal blue and white or black. They were all there to see the “Men of Distinction” strut across that stage. And strut they did! Enthusiastic applause from the audience signaled their appreciation of the performance. The first scene, with all of the models wearing some part of their outfit in royal blue and white to salute the Zetas, was an introduction. This scene allowed each model to proudly parade the runway as the fashion show commentator, Carolyn Starling Cloud, described the personal profile of each of them. How interesting those profiles were! The occupations run the gamut from poet to law enforcement officer; business manager to politician; health care facilitator to educator/administrator; and financial planner to non-profit executive. Without a doubt, they are men whose lives and duties impact others in a very positive way within our communities. Naturally handsome, dashing in their outfits, and confident in their stride, the “Men of Distinction” modeled casual and sports outfits in scene two and showed their audience how to dress to succeed on the golf course as well as the baseball field or tennis courts after a day’s work. In fact, they also showed us what a man should look like after a 4:00 a.m. trip to the gym or an early morning run. The next scene featured business and professional attire, and the final scene was formal wear. For both scenes, all eyes were on the men as they appeared, one by one or in a group, to show off the fitted suits and tuxedoes in various individual styles. Many wore garments from their own closets, but three of them modeled tuxedoes from Sacino and Sons Formal Wear. Mr. Charley Williams, dubbed the mentor, set the pace for each scene. His tuxedo with scarf, however, took formal dressing to another level. That was certainly an elegant picture to behold. The other men followed him with their own signature outfits. Keith George, Justin Jones, and LaShante’ Keys wore tuxedoes with accessories that reminded everyone that they are all members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. City councilman Wengay Newton and former mayoral candidate, Deveron Gibbons, wore basic black tuxedoes, but the flair with which they wore them added much to the outfits. Marion Wolfe, III, expressed his individuality in red and black formal wear. What a handsome picture he presented as he looked over the audience with sunglass shaded eyes. Kinte’ Thompson, Jonathan Marina, and Christopher “CC” Clark, who have modeled in previous Zeta fashion shows, were as impressive as ever when they moved across the stage. If you were not there, you certainly should have been. You missed one of the most entertaining events yet. Struts, turns, and profiles brought numerous oohs and aahs from the ladies in the audience. This reaction alone could serve as proof that these ten “Men of Distinction” gave a fashion show that will be remembered for a long, long time. Ann Sherman White was their choreographer/trainer. Christopher “CC” Clark recited one of his original poems and dedicated it to all of the women in the audience. It was a touching performance and much appreciated by the ladies. Other program participants included Jeremy Hames as soloist. Jeremy also served as Santa Claus, who presented gifts and door prizes to winners. Musicians for the event included Hank Ashwood on the saxophone, presenting “music for dining”, and Horace Jones (DJ Showtime) with special tunes for the fashion show. Mary Holland gave the occasion and Eloise Thompson gave the Invocation and grace. Daphne Miller introduced chapter members, auxiliaries, community affiliations, and dignitaries present. She also made presentations of certificates of appreciation to the models and other participants at the end of the program. Prior to the presentation of the fashion show, Helen Shaw paid poetic tribute to the active charter members, Mary Turner and Katherine Valentine. Betty Smith presented them crystal vases filled with white carnations and roses. Both ladies have been members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for more than fifty-five years. The local chapter was chartered in 1955. Edna Dawson and Mary Holland were co-chairpersons for this event, with Emma Cavin, Kay Mullen, Rosa Nesbitt, Helen Shaw, and Eloise Thompson as committee members. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has been in existence since 1920. Headquartered in Washington, DC, it is a community-conscious, action-oriented organization with chapters over the continental United States, the Virgin Islands, Korea, Africa, and Europe, all helping other people excel in mind, body, and spirit. Proceeds from Saturday’s event will be used to promote community projects and scholarships to youth. source:http://www.theweeklychallenger.com/news/Article/Article.asp?NewsID=100614&sID=14&ItemSource=L |
