Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran today told the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to consider setting up secialised centres to cater to the specific needs of traditional and emerging textiles clusters.
Addressing the 15th convocation of the prestigious institute here, Mr Maran said there was a sustained demand for such intervention by NIFT from textiles clusters such as Dodbhallapur, Anantpur, Kolhapur, Surat, Jaipur, Ludhiana and Tirupur.
He urged the Board of Governors of NIFT to be more concerned about the overall industry needs and take up the challenges required to build a new India where every citizen had the opportunity to work, earn and live.
“It’s high time that we create a global identity through cutting edge ‘India designs’.” the Minister said.
He called upon NIFT designers to be equally concerned about the handloom weavers, khadi weavers and handicrafts artisans and ensure that the design interventions help them, too.
Speaking about the enviournment threats caused by textile units , Mr Maran called upon the NIFT technologists setting up their factories to be aware and concerned about the carbon emission levels and take steps to keep these under check.
Taking advantage of the developments in information and communication and technology, NIFT management professionals should make the trickle down of fashion faster and devise separate programmes to clothe India, the Minister said.
Mr Maran noted that NIFT had developed a vibrant relationship with leading international institutes in the field of fashion, which helped to foster cross fertilisation of ideas and provided a tremendous net value addition to both sides.
The Minister conferred degrees to about 1500 post-graduates and graduates who passed out from the institute this year.
NIFT was set up by the Government in 1986 as an autonomous Society in collaboration with the Fashion Technology (FIT), New York, to train professionals to meet the requirements of the textiles industry. The institute has pioneered the evolution of fashion business education across the country through its network of centres at New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Bhopal, Shillong, Kannur and Kangra. NIFT, besides conducting regular professional undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Design, Management and Technology, also offers short duration part-time courses under its Continuing Education (CE) Programme.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006 came into effect from April 01, 2007. The Act provides statutory status to the Institute and formally recognizes its leadership in fashion technology sector, and empowers NIFT to award degrees to its students. NIFT is the first institute in the world to award degrees in fashion education. The President of India is the Visitor of the institute.
