When the Karen Walker collection hits the catwalk in New Zealand’s fashion week 18-year-old Holly Broomhall will be the only person snapping it for a new magazine.
The Year 13 Wanganui Girls’ College student has only been photographing fashion for a year and a half, but her drive has brought her some amazing opportunities.
She goes to Auckland on Thursday to photograph designer Karen Walker’s latest styles, both on the runway and backstage. She chose the label because she likes it, and also because it’s popular and will get her own pictures more exposure.
Miss Broomnall said photography, fashion and beauty were an absolute passion for her.
A teacher sent her to a national photographic convention, where she met Wanganui photographer Mark Brimblecomb. He invited her to spend some time learning with him.
He also suggested she volunteer to take pictures for a new international magazine picturing all the fashion weeks held worldwide.
Miss Broomhall is one of five New Zealand volunteers, and the youngest.
Progressing into photography was natural for a person who had always been good at realistic drawing and painting, in a soft style. Her photographs were often taken outdoors, and have an ethereal, fairy tale atmosphere.
Miss Broomhall is working hard to build up a good portfolio. Last weekend she aimed to photograph Miss Earth New Zealand, Wanganui’s Catherine Irving, and a previous Miss Wanganui, Michelle Kleinsmith.
Her usual models were friends Renee Floyd and Victoria Fraser, who enjoyed the dressing up process as much as the photographer.
Next year she aims to stay in Wellington with her sister, fashion designer Rose Broomhall, and build her portfolio further. She said she’d be offering free photo shoots to aspiring make-up artists, models, designers and hairdressers who needed publicity.
On November 7 she has her first paid job – photographing Wanganui’s Underground Youth Fashion Show.
As if that wasn’t enough, Holly Broomhall has also been a Miss Wanganui runner-up and a competitive rower.
