The Dean of fashion

DESIGNER Robert Dean is not into fashion but that’s not a faux pas.
Robert has been a three-time winner at Fashion Awards Australia and he could add another to the mantle this year.
The fashion designer is also a judge at the event where he will help critique the secondary college entrants.
He said design and workmanship were high on his marking sheet.
“It’s those that have done something technical but pulled it off very well,” Robert said.
His clothes horses will strut the catwalk in the long gown and bridal category.
“I’m not really into fashion, the word almost means disposable, but when it comes to long gowns they are beautiful dresses,” Robert said.
The 47-year-old’s pieces are based on a single idea, with his designer instincts holding the rest in good measure.
Robert said his theme was black velvet this year, which will take four months to prepare.
In high demand he said his reputation was based on word of mouth.
He made theatre costumes for 20 years before moving into fashion design.
Robert had created elaborate costumes for casino shows, the Australian Ballet, Victorian opera and drag shows.
“I have travelled Australia and overseas to sew, sent to China to create circus outfits,” he said.
“I never thought with a sewing machine I would be paid really well to go overseas.”
Fashion Awards Australia will take place on 28 August at the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre.
